Many seniors find that life in a senior living community is much richer and more joyful than they originally thought possible. This is especially true during the holidays.  Many senior living communities go all out during this time to provide a festive and happy season for their team and residents.

In addition to the full activities calendars, many people report that having neighbors and peers close by to celebrate really brings out the joy of the season for assisted living community residents. Without the stress of maintaining a home through the winter months, many residents also report feeling more relaxed and able to more fully celebrate and enjoy the holiday season.

As we head into the full swing of the holiday season, now is the time to check your community bulletin for upcoming events and activities. If you are only considering a move to a senior living community, now is the time to schedule a tour and check out each community’s activity calendar for yourself.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

You can always expect at least one visit from Santa Claus during the Christmas season. This is a great time to invite your grandchildren to your new apartment to  enjoy the festivities and have the opportunity to take photos with Santa. This is a great way to connect and make new memories with your loved ones.  Or for the child at heart, sit down and tell Santa what YOU want for the holidays this year.

Caroling

Getting out to sing Christmas carols during the holidays is a wonderful tradition that can be arranged through your community with a local church or school.  If you’re not the greatest singer, you can also take in the carolers that will likely go door-to-door and/or put on a concert at a central location within the community.

Gift Exchanges

It’s always a great feeling to give gifts around the holidays. That’s why gift exchanges are very common within senior living communities this time of the year. They may host a “secret Santa” exchange where everyone picks a specific person to buy a gift for. Or they may host a “white elephant” gift exchange where the gift is generic and chosen at random by other participants. In traditional white elephant manner, participants have the opportunity to steal a previously-opened gift if they so choose.

Meals & Celebrations

Most assisted living communities offer at least one opportunity to dress up in your holiday best and spend time with friends and neighbors while enjoying a festive meal with games that encourage you to get to know your neighbors better. From the decorations to the festive smells and atmosphere, these are always a hit among the senior living community residents.

Crafting

One of the best parts of the holiday season is “decking the halls.” Breaking out the holiday decor is a surefire way to initiate the holiday spirit. As such, many communities offer one or more crafting days to personalize your holiday decor and bond with your friends and neighbors.

Attend Special Church Services

This is the time of the year that many local churches put on holiday plays and concerts that are enjoyed by all in the community. Many assisted living communities provide round-trip transportation to these events, so check your community calendar and make sure you reserve your seat!

New Year’s Eve Countdown

Ring in the new year surrounded by friends and neighbors with your community’s New Year Eve celebration that’s sure to have you popping the confetti and looking forward to the coming year.

These are just a few of the celebrations you can expect in a senior living community. If this is your first year celebrating the holidays in your new assisted living apartment, you might be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to full-enjoy the spirit of the season this year.
