Spring is in the air and so are new flavors. At least we recommend new flavors that are nutritious in your meals.

You probably didn’t know that March is “National Nutrition Month®” and that the theme of the month is “Celebrate a World of Flavors.” Now that you do, you should celebrate by experiencing new flavors and foods from around the world.

Here is how you can take part at your assisted living community and truly enjoy senior living and your retirement years.

Try great new flavors by making new choices

Just like how you experience new things when you travel, meals can be a way to experience new foods and flavors. Starting with breakfast, try switching things up

For example, a smoothie is a great option if you aren’t already starting your day off with one. Smoothies can be made with low-fat yogurt or buttermilk and include fruits. Tropical fruits like papaya or mango might transport you to the Caribbean. Other fruits and even vegetables in smoothies include blueberries and other berries, bananas, apples, spinach and cucumbers.

A little European flavor comes in a Spanish omelet. You can have one of potatoes and other vegetables and topped with a sprinkling of cheese.

Oatmeal is popular in Scotland and elsewhere and try it with fresh or frozen fruit, dried fruits such as raisins, or nuts. Instead of brown sugar sweeten it with cinnamon or honey.

Reimagine your snacks

Snacks can be the place where good nutrition goes to the pits. Instead of sugary or processed food snacks, do your health a favor and choose foods from different food groups.

Raw vegetables and fruit are great options. Carrots, apples, sliced bell peppers, cucumbers and other fruits are vegetables are great for snacking. For some Middle Eastern flair try them with hummus, a tasty and nutritious dip made with mashed chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice and garlic.

Chips are another great, flavorful option, as long as they’re the right kind. Steer clear of potato chips and try whole grain tortilla chips. Try dipping them in guacamole or a salsa made with fruit or vegetables—or both—for some new flavorful options.

What you want to emphasize in National Nutrition Month® is making a choice that is both nutritious and flavorful. That’s healthy eating and a great way to enjoy foods and flavors from other countries and culture. Best off, it’s a great way to treat your body as well.
