It’s no secret that COVID-19 has severely limited all of us in our ability to interact with others, which has been especially true for those who reside in a long-term care facility. As the virus continues to be an issue for us all, it is becoming even more important for us to find alternative activities that can allow our residents to have some form of interaction with others, while still remaining safe and following the CDC guidelines.

There are several options that are available for residents and their caregivers, and with a little creative planning, there can be new ways for everyone to get the social interaction they crave.

One such option is using technology to stay connected. Besides the obvious, such as FaceTime and Zoom, there are also many apps that allow people to play games together online. Without discounting the importance of residents having the ability to communicate with friends and family via video chat, sometimes playing a game with a friend can be just the thing that is needed. There are so many different options for games, all with varying skill levels, that the possibilities are seemingly endless.

For those who enjoy things like zoos and museums, there are numerous places that have created virtual tours that allow people to ‘visit’ their favorite places, all while remaining safe and healthy. Another benefit of a virtual tour is that these are not limited to local attractions. Thanks to technology, it is easy to check out zoos and museums both near and far. This is a great opportunity to visit somewhere virtually that would likely never be seen in reality.

These are just a few ideas that can be helpful in maintaining social interaction for residents who may be isolated and feeling the effects of that isolation. While safety is, of course, important, it is also essential to try to meet the social needs of the residents so they can have the best possible all-around care.

In addition to these great suggestions, the staff at Regency at Augusta have been vigilant in ensuring that our residents have plenty of fun and uplifting activities to stay busy, social, and stimulated each day.
