Finding the right care for yourself or a loved one in their time of need can be difficult. Finding a community that fits your lifestyle, desires, care needs, and personality can be challenging, to say the least.

It may take more than one visit to a particular community before you’re ready to make a decision. During the first visit, you might make an appointment with the director to do a general tour during the week. We recommend touring around midday so you have a chance to sample the menu. This time is also a great time to get a feel for the daily routine and the overall atmosphere of the community.

During that first visit, you should be on high alert for red flags such as cold or distant staff members, bad smells or dirty areas, and residents that appear unhappy or disengaged. Of course, you could be catching someone on a bad day, but trust your intuition and remember that your first impression matters.

It’s important to talk to residents during your visit and ask what they love most about the community. This will be a great opportunity to gauge the level of satisfaction of current residents.

Questions To Ask

As you plan your tour, you should compile a list of questions to ask to verify any information you read or heard about the community, as well as dig deeper to find the answers to questions that are important to you or your loved one.

Some questions that you might want to include on your list are:

  • What types and levels of care are provided?
  • What are the qualifications of team members?
  • What sets this community apart from others like it?
  • Are family members included in the residents’ individual care plans?
  • What amenities, programs, and activities are offered and are there any services that require an additional fee?

If you are touring with a loved one, be sure to ask them questions prior to the appointment to discover what is most important to them, their desires, their needs, and some activities and events that they hope to see on the schedule.

Getting a good feeling of where your loved one is at will help you make a better decision during your tour and tailor your questions to ensure you’re getting the most accurate picture of the community and how it operates.

How Are They Accountable?

When touring communities, be sure to ask the uncomfortable questions such as, “who is your governing authority, what are you audited on, and how often do these audits occur?”

It’s important to find out if the community is overseen by the proper agency to ensure they are being held to high standards of care for the residents they’ve been entrusted with helping.
